Faith and Religion Insights

Welcome! At the Highland Church of Christ, we are simply a group of Christians striving to love God, love one another, and follow the pattern of the New Testament church. We have no human creeds, no central earthly headquarters, and no governing body other than Jesus Christ. 

The Bible is our sole guide for faith and practice.

Below is an overview of what you will find us teaching, practicing, and living by.

The Bible is Our Sole Authority

We believe the Bible is the word of God. However, we look specifically to the New Testament as our guide for church organization, worship, and daily Christian living. 

• We operate under a famous guiding principle: "Where the Bible speaks, we speak; where the Bible is silent, we are silent."  (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 1 Peter 4:11 
• We do not rely on written creeds, catechisms, or modern church manuals—we believe the scriptures alone are what we use to guide our daily lives.
•  We are a non-denominational congregation. We do not view ourselves as a branch of any denomination, but rather as part of the body of Christ that was established in the New Testament. Our members do not wear human-made religious titles; we are simply Christians (Acts 11:26; Roman 16:16). 

The Plan of Salvation

We believe salvation is a free gift of God’s grace, made possible through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  All people have sinned and separated themselves from God, and that salvation is a free gift of God’s grace, made possible only through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 3:23; Ephesians 2:8-9). 

 While grace is God's part, The New Testament shows that we must respond to that grace in faith and obedience. We teach the biblical steps to receiving God's salvation: 

• Hear the gospel of Christ (Romans 10:17) 
• Believe that Jesus is the Son of God (Hebrews 11:6) 
• Repent of past sins and turn toward God (Acts 17:30) 
• Confess faith in Jesus before others (Romans 10:10) 
• Be Baptized for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 2:38) 
• Live Faithfully dedicated to God's word (Revelation 2:10)

Our Worship Services

Our worship services are characterized by their simplicity, designed to reflect the practices found in the early church. 

• A Cappella Singing:  We praise God using our voices alone, without the accompaniment of mechanical instruments of music. We practice congregational a cappella singing because the New Testament instructs Christians to sing and make melody in their hearts to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). 
• Weekly Communion:  We partake of the Lord’s Supper (the bread and the fruit of the vine) every first day of the week (Sunday). We do this to remember the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, just as the early disciples did (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26). 
• Prayer & Preaching:  Our services include times of heartfelt prayer led by men of the congregation, as well as a scripturally sound lesson (sermon) designed to edify the church and instruct us in how to live godly lives (Acts 2:42; 1 Timothy 2:1-2). 
• Giving-Free Will Offering: Each Sunday, our members contribute financially to support the work of the local congregation, benevolence, and spreading the gospel. We do not solicit funds from our visitors; this is a responsibility of our local members  (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:7).

Local and Autonomous Leadership

Every local congregation is completely independent and self-governing. 

• At the Highland Church of Christ congregation our group is lead by the Men of the Church to operate the day to day duties of leading our members. Each member has responsibilities they are responsible for within our leadership dynamic. 
• Some Church of Christ follow the New Testament pattern, each congregation is led locally by a plurality of qualified male Elders or Deacons who oversee the spiritual and leadership roles in the congregation. while preachers/evangelists are hired to teach and proclaim the Word.
